Richard Chase: The Vampire of Sacramento

Richard Chase’s whole life led up to his murderous month. He had a terribly abusive mother. At the age of 10 he had the MacDonald triad: arson, bed-wetting, and cruelty to animals. When he was in high school he had girlfriends but none of them lasted because he couldn’t maintain an erection. He was only sexually aroused by the killings of animals or the stabbing of people. He was a teen in the 1970s and was really into doing acid. They were never sure if he had drug induced psychosis or paranoid schizophrenia, but later on it was decided that he did in fact have schizophrenia. He started going to the doctor all the time and telling the doctor that someone stole his pulmonary artery because his heart was stopping and that his cranial bones were moving around and coming out the back of his head. He shaved his head because he was so sure that this was happening. He also thought his blood was turning to powder.

He started accusing his mother of poisoning him so his dad got him his own apartment. He was living alone and gave himself blood poisoning. He was injecting himself with rabbit blood because he thought it was going to help his “powdered blood” problems. No one was sure where he was getting the rabbits for the blood. He started out with just drinking the blood but then ended up injected it into his own veins. He was involuntarily committed to a psychiatric hospital and the staff was scared of him. One time a nurse went into his room and there was blood all over his face to which he said that he had cut himself. They found dead birds outside of his window because he had been catching them and drinking their blood. The staff in the hospital started calling him Dracula.

He finally got balanced out on drugs and after a year they released him from the hospital. When he leaves his mother weans him off of the medications and he gets his own apartment again. He gets roommates to live with him and he was so weird that they demanded that he move out. He was drunk and high on acid all the time. He would nail himself into his room and accuse his roommates of trying to get into his room to invade him. He was naked a lot of the time in the apartment and he refused to move out so all of his roommates did. When he was completely alone he would get animals and mutilate them and drink their blood. He would put the blood in a blender with some coke blend it up to drink. He thought that by doing this it would keep his heart from shrinking.

The month before Richard’s killings started, he was at Pyramid Lake and a guy found him covered in blood, naked. The man called the police and they found a bucket of blood and Richard’s truck was covered in blood. They end up arresting him and tested the blood which ended up just being cows blood so they let him go.

The killings began on December 29, 1977. Richard was driving around his neighborhood and started shooting people. He killed 51 year old, Ambrose Griffin who was helping his wife carry groceries into the house. A 12 year old boy reported that a guy in a brown Transam shot at him but missed.

He would walk around the neighborhood and try doors to see if they were unlocked. He told the FBI agent after he had been caught that if a door was locked when he tried it that that meant he wasn’t welcome and would move on, but if the door was open he would go into the house. A woman told a story of watching a man walk up and try her back patio door, which was locked. He then tried her window which was also locked. He went up to the front door which was open and they stared at each other and then he just walked away.

Teresa Wallin was Chase’s next victim, on January 23, 1978. Three months pregnant at the time, Wallin was surprised at her home by Chase, who shot her three times, killing her using the same gun he used to kill Griffin. He then raped her corpse while stabbing her several times with a butcher knife. He then removed multiple organs, cut off one of her nipples and drank the blood. Before leaving, he collected dog feces from the yard and stuffed it into the victim’s mouth and down her throat.

On January 27, 1978 he committed his final murders. Evelyn Miroth, 38, Danny Meredith, Evelyn’s friend, Jason Miroth, Evelyn’s 6 year old son, and David Ferreria, Evelyn’s 22 month old son. He shot them all and engaged in necrophilia and cannibalism with Evelyn’s body. Jason Miroth had a playdate that day with a neighbor girl who knocked on the door which startled Richard so he fled taking David’s body with him. She called the police and the police were able to find a perfect hand print along with shoe imprints.

The police got a call from Nancy Holden who said she was shopping on the day that this was all happening. She said that a freaky guy walked up to her and asked her “Were you on the motorcycle when Kurt was killed?” Ten years before her boyfriend Kurt had been killed in a motorcycle accident in high school. She asked Richard who he was and he responded with “It’s me, Rick Chase.” She said she had remembered him from high school, but that he looked different than she remembered. He had on a sweatshirt that had blood on it, and he was barefoot. He kept trying to talk to her, but she kept getting weird vibes from him so when his back was turned she left. He followed her out to her car and wanted a ride from her. She got into her car and locked the doors and drove away. This call led the cops to his apartment.

When the cops arrived they could tell that he was home, but he wouldn’t come out. After hours of waiting outside, he came out holding a box. They arrested him and his apartment was covered in blood: the walls, the ceiling, everything. There were three blenders and a bunch of crazy shit on his counter. The refrigerator had body parts in it.

The FBI agent that profiled him went to visit him in San Quentin after he was convicted and Richard said that the killings weren’t his fault because Nazis and UFOs were trying to kill him, so he needed to drink the blood and eat the organs in order to stay alive. After he had explained that he pulled macaroni and cheese out of his pocket and said that the prison was trying to poison him and he wanted the agent to test it for him. All of the inmates in prison were scared of him and would constantly tell him that he needed to kill himself. In 1980 he stockpiled his antidepressants and overdosed.
